Course Description

This professional development course introduces primary school educators to Universal Design for Learning (UDL): a proactive, evidence-informed framework for designing inclusive, high-quality learning experiences for every pupil. Rather than retrofitting supports after barriers arise, UDL empowers teachers to anticipate and reduce barriers through thoughtful lesson design from the outset.

Across five focused modules, participants will build a confident understanding of UDL principles and explore how to apply them in everyday classroom practice – from how lessons are structured and resources are designed, to how learning is assessed and evidenced. The course also supports school leaders in embedding UDL as a sustainable, whole-school approach to inclusion.

The course is firmly grounded in the Irish educational context, with explicit links to the Primary School Curriculum (1999), the Primary Curriculum Framework (2023), the Digital Learning Framework, the Wellbeing Policy Framework, and School Self-Evaluation (SSE) processes. Participants will leave with practical strategies, applied tasks, and the professional language to lead inclusive practice with confidence.

Module 1: UDL Foundations

  • Explain the three UDL principles: Engagement, Representation, and Action & Expression, and their relevance to daily classroom practice
  • Distinguish clearly between UDL, differentiation, and individual SEND supports, recognising how they complement rather than replace one another
  • Identify how barriers to learning can arise from lesson design rather than learner ability
  • Connect UDL to the inclusive ethos of the Primary School Curriculum (1999) and to School Self-Evaluation frameworks
  • Reflect on current planning practices and identify opportunities for a more proactive, inclusive design approach

UDL Classroom Practice

  • Design lessons that account for learner variability, writing flexible learning intentions and success criteria that support varied pathways to success
  • Embed proactive scaffolds, including modelling, chunking, visual supports, and structured prompts, to increase pupil independence and confidence
  • Plan structured choice to support engagement and pupil autonomy without adding complexity to classroom management
  • Implement literacy, language, and vocabulary supports as part of universal classroom practice
  • Use UDL-aligned Assessment for Learning strategies to gather valid, varied evidence of pupil learning

UDL Leadership & Whole-School Approach

  • Plan a phased, term-by-term approach to UDL implementation at year-group or whole-school level
  • Support and train colleagues using clear, accessible language that avoids jargon and reduces initiative fatigue
  • Audit classroom practice to identify strengths and improve consistency of inclusive lesson design across the school
  • Create a progression pathway to support early career teachers and staff new to the school
  • Align UDL implementation with school priorities such as wellbeing, behaviour, attendance, and quality of education in preparation for inspection

UDL, Digital Learning & Assessment for Impact

  • Integrate digital tools meaningfully within UDL lesson design across subjects, including Literacy, Mathematics, SESE, and SPHE
  • Embed assistive technologies, such as text-to-speech, speech-to-text, and visual supports, as part of universal provision rather than individual add-ons
  • Design digital and multimodal assessment opportunities, including digital portfolios that capture diverse evidence of learning
  • Use digital formative assessment tools to provide real-time feedback and strengthen pupil agency
  • Align digital UDL practice with School Self-Evaluation processes and use digital evidence to support evidence-based improvement planning

School Self-Evaluation for Inclusive Improvement

  • Explain the purpose and cyclical nature of SSE within the Irish primary school context, recognising it as an ongoing process of professional reflection rather than a one-off compliance task
  • Use SSE strategically to strengthen inclusive education, identifying appropriate priority areas that are linked to improved learner experiences and outcomes
  • Apply professional language from Looking at Our School 2022 to evaluate teaching, learning, and inclusion with clarity and confidence
  • Select and analyse qualitative and quantitative data sources to identify patterns, barriers, and strengths in relation to inclusive practice, and translate these into realistic, measurable improvement actions
  • Involve stakeholders meaningfully in the SSE process, establish clear indicators of impact, and monitor progress over time to demonstrate the effect of inclusive improvement efforts

    Once you have completed your training and all the required steps outlined in the course, you’ll be able to request your certificate to download / print and progress to your next course.

The course completion requirements are as follows:

You are required to post two comments to the forum post at the end of each module throughout the course. Each contribution is required to be at least 100 words.

Your progression from module to module is contingent on the successful completion of these assignments.

The end of course reflective assignment must demonstrate achievement of the course’s stated learning outcomes.

You will be required to complete a minimum of 10 hours online and an additional 10 hours either online or offline

If you signed up for your course online you will have received an email with login details to start your training. Please check your spam/junk email folder as it may have landed in there.

All our course facilitators monitor the progress of every teacher on their respective course so please allow up to 2 weeks for the grade and feedback for the End of Course assignment.

The courses contain 5 modules each of which is made up of individual lessons.

You are required to engage with the course for a total of 20 hours (10 Hours online is mandatory and the remaining 10 hours can be online or offline for other learning activities)

Yes you can decide to do either. It is up to you what way you want to complete the course, once you demonstrate engagement for a total of 20 hours (10 of these must be online)

You are required to post to the forum posts at the end of each module throughout the course. You will need to post two comments. Each contribution is required to be at least 100 words.

This is usually caused by not meeting the criteria for completing the previous module, in particular posting at least two contributions to the course forum.

The minimum word count is to be no less than 300 words and not more than 500 words.

Naturally, like most courses, it is only possible to evaluate your grade when you have completed the course.

There is two parts to the assessment:

<strong>1. Meeting the Minimum Criteria:</strong> You are required to complete all 5 modules, regularly contribute to the course forum after each module (at least 2 meaningful contributions per module).

<strong>2. Assignments:</strong> You must complete Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs) and posts to the forums at the end of each module, as well as an overall End of Course Assignment. Once you have met each of these conditions, you should qualify for your EPV days and receiving your Flúirse certificate of completion.

You’ll be glad to hear that ALL our course facilitators monitor the progress of every teacher on their respective course and will always inform them before the course closing date if they do not appear to have met the above criteria for any reason.
