FSC2680 Creating Trauma Informed Schools and Developing Therapeutic Classrooms
Course Description
This course equips primary teachers with the theoretical knowledge and practical strategies needed to create safe, inclusive, and emotionally supportive learning environments. Drawing on the work of Bruce D. Perry, John Bowlby, and the NCSE Relate framework, participants develop a deep understanding of how trauma, stress, and adversity affect children’s development, behaviour, and capacity to learn.
Grounded in neuroscience and relational practice, the course promotes a “regulation first” approach, supporting teachers to move from compliance-based classroom management towards connection-led, trauma-informed responses. Participants build practical co-regulation skills, develop therapeutic classroom environments, and strengthen their reflective practice through structured journals, SSE processes, and collaborative discussion forums.

Course Content
Module 1: Childhood Trauma and the Brain
- Understand how the amygdala becomes hyper-alert under threat and how this reduces access to the prefrontal cortex, limiting reasoning and impulse control
- Identify different types of trauma and recognise fight, flight, freeze and fawn responses as adaptive survival behaviours
- Reinterpret challenging classroom behaviours as stress responses rather than wilful defiance
- Apply practical regulation strategies including co-regulation, predictable routines and somatosensory breaks to support readiness to learn
- Conduct a classroom regulation audit and implement targeted adjustments informed by neuroscience
Module 2: Attachment and Safety in the Classroom
- Understand attachment theory (Bowlby, Ainsworth) and identify how insecure attachment patterns present in classroom behaviour, including avoidance, anxiety and withdrawal
- Recognise how relational consistency, attunement and co-regulation create a secure classroom base for all learners
- Use the NCSE Relate framework, including the Stressor Tool, to identify environmental and relational stressors affecting individual pupils
- Implement attachment-informed strategies such as daily connection rituals, structured check-ins and relational repair conversations
- Analyse behavioural incidents through an attachment lens and design connection-led responses that prioritise emotional safety
Module 3: Creating an Emotionally Intelligent Classroom
- Explore the five core competencies of emotional intelligence (Goleman, Salovey) and their role in learning
- Develop skills in emotion coaching, teaching emotional vocabulary and modelling emotional expression in developmentally appropriate ways
- Implement practical daily practices such as morning check-ins, feelings scales, reflective circle time and cooperative games
- Use conflict resolution and collaborative problem-solving strategies to strengthen peer relationships and classroom climate
- Reflect on personal emotional regulation patterns and how teacher self-regulation influences the learning environment
Module 4: Creating Therapeutic Learning Environments
- Understand how noise, visual clutter, lighting, spatial arrangement and lack of predictability function as environmental stressors affecting nervous system regulation
- Conduct a digital environmental classroom audit to identify sensory stressors and barriers to participation
- Design and implement low-cost environmental adjustments including quiet regulation spaces, flexible seating, decluttered visual fields and improved transition flow
- Apply insights from ecological systems theory (Bronfenbrenner) and sensory processing research (Ayres) to inclusive classroom design
- Evaluate the impact of environmental changes on pupil engagement, regulation and classroom climate through structured reflection
Module 5: Therapeutic Teaching and Connection-Led Behaviour Support
- Reframe behaviour as communication of unmet needs or nervous system dysregulation, drawing on the work of Perry, van der Kolk and Kohn
- Apply co-regulation strategies and restorative conversations that maintain clear boundaries while responding with empathy and dignity
- Practise connection-led responses and relationship repair through role-play and case study analysis
- Develop a trauma-informed behaviour support plan that incorporates regulation strategies, relational repair and predictable boundaries
- Reduce reliance on punitive measures and build teacher confidence in responding to challenging behaviour using inclusive, therapeutic approaches
